this looks very interesting…
“The digital revolution of the last decade has unleashed creativity and talent of people in an unprecedented way, unleashing unlimited creative opportunites.
But does democratized culture mean better art, film, music and literature or is true talent instead flooded and drowned in the vast digital ocean of mass culture? Is it cultural democracy or mediocrity?
This is the question addressed by PressPausePlay, a documentary film containing interviews with some of the world’s most influential creators of the digital era.”
Unfortunately the clip below was left out of the final film but check out the other clips and trailer. Gives some interesting perspectives on where we are at with ‘digital’ culture and how to try and work with it.
We are delighted to be screening the acclaimed Northern Soul Documentary ‘The Way Of The Crowd’ as part of our Northern Soul night @ The Grand Social.
This screening will appeal to die hard Northern Soul heads and all round music lovers as we hear the stories behind the sounds and dancing of Wigan Casino and some of the people that played and partied there.
The screening will be followed by a night of great sounds from Joe M, a well respected lover of all things Northern Soul.
Screening at 7.30pm
€5 entry
Northern Soul sounds in the back bar until close.
In the meantime, check out this gem, Call Me by Emmit Long.
Time for us to make our way back to Cork again after our last successful trip there as part of the Cork Jazz Festival. This time around we are excited to be part of a whole day of musical festivities at our home from home in The Pavilion.
The day starts from 4pm downstairs where we have NuNorthern Soul from the UK setting up shop in the bar for an afternoon blend of lazy beats, sublime soul, cosmic weirdness and balearic oddities to go with your food and pints. NuNorthern Soul will be presented by honouree Cork Man Phat Phil Copper w/ guest selector me ( cubikmusik ). Really looking forward to this as I’m a big fan of Sunday music and have followed Phil’s NuNorthern Soul selections on uStream which we’ll be broadcasting on that day. Check it here, 4pm-7pm.
At 7pm we move upstairs for a very special screening of the acclaimed Northern Soul documentary ‘The Way Of The Crowd’ along with the award winning short film ‘Function At The Junction’. These tell the wonderful story behind the Northern Soul sound that became a movement in the UK and Ireland with the arrival of American sounds on our shores. The documentary contains original footage from Wigan Casino which became the hub for many of the sounds events and was infamous for their all nighters with music running until 6am. Check out the trailer here.
After our screening we move back downstairs to the bar until close with Martin Goggin from the Munster Soul Night’s spinning Northern Soul classics for us. We are honoured to have Martin share some of the music collection that he has amassed over the years as part of his passion for this scene.
Leaving you with Frank Wilson’s ‘Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)’ which was the last tune played at Wigan Casino before it closed in 1981.
See you in Cork for a day of quality music and hanging out.
F&N is very happy to be able to screen this amazingly comprehensive Northern Soul documentary, The Way Of The Crowd, in Cork and Dublin in early 2011.
I came across this documentary when I picked up the Soul Function that it is a part of at a flea market in Dublin. €5 bargain and just over a year later we get to show it to many more folks.
Sunday, January 29th, sees us in Cork, back at our home away from home, The Pavilion, for a very special day of music and film. The day starts with a very special guest, and honorary Cork man, Phil Cooper and his NuNorthern Soul set up playing Sunday afternoon tunes. He’ll be accompanied on the day by myself (cubikmusik) hoping to compliment the sounds and vibes. Then we move upstairs for the screening (€5 entry) and afterward back downstairs for Northern Soul spinning for the rest of the night. More details on this to follow so check our events section.
Dublin’s screening sees us occupying a new home for 2011 in The Grand Social (formerly Pravda). We’re delighted to be getting comfortable on the sofas with some nice stew from The Winding Stair (only €5) as we sip a pint and watch movies on a Sunday evening. February 6th sees our first night there with a night of Northern Soul tunes to follow by Joe Moran, a mainstay on the Mod / Northern Soul scene in Dublin.
Check the trailer below and hopefully see you at one of the screenings.
